Tuesday Thoughts: The Hidden Cost Of Recruitment

I want to ask a question for my Tuesday Thoughts.

Are you busy?

Are you constantly caught up in the whirlwind of your workday, juggling tasks left and right?

Think about it: in just 6 weeks, you manage to cram in a whopping 225 hours of effort.

That’s an impressive feat by any measure. But here’s something to ponder: did you realise that the average time it takes to successfully recruit for a commercial support vacancy is also 6 weeks?

Yes, you read that right.

Now, if recruitment isn’t your full-time thing, and your business lacks an in-house HR or recruitment team, brace yourself – the responsibility of finding that perfect candidate might land squarely on your desk. And the clock starts ticking the moment you discover that you’re short a team member, especially if they’re already waving their goodbyes.

So, amidst your usual hustle and bustle, you’re suddenly tasked with crafting a job specification that shines, because let’s face it, the job market is a fierce battleground right now. Your goal? Making potential applicants dream of working with your company. It’s an investment that can’t be skipped if you want the rest of the process to go smoothly.

But hold on, where do you even begin to advertise your vacancy? And how do you reel in the cream of the crop? Brace yourself, because this stage might have a financial sting too.

As applications start pouring in, you might find yourself rejoicing – and then immediately facing the reality of reviewing and responding to each one. A few hours here and there can quickly morph into a considerable chunk of your precious week. A 20% ish chunk of your week in fact.

Do you have 20% of your week to spare? Probably not.

And just when you thought you’ve made strides, the challenge of interviews comes knocking. Wrangling potential candidates into the interview room can be like navigating a maze blindfolded. Expect the unexpected, like an applicant suddenly disappearing due to an emergency or a sudden bout of interview fatigue.

The “what ifs” keep piling up. What if out of those carefully selected applicants, none seem to be the perfect fit? Suddenly, you’re back to square one, all that hard work you’ve poured into finding the perfect candidate starts to feel like sand slipping through your fingers. Plus, the person you’re trying to replace might just be slipping away too.

Back to stage one for you.

So, there you have it – a glimpse into the tumultuous world of recruitment.

The next time you find yourself looking to hire, remember, there’s always more to it than meets the eye.

Or if you don’t fancy the stress, engage with a really great recruitment partner who will take care of pretty much all the above for you.
