Reflecting on the 10 Years Since Chairing Birmingham Future

10 years ago today, SimkissGuy Recruitment Co-Founder and Managing Director Rebecca Simkiss became Chair of BPS Birmingham Future, and has marked the milestone by sharing her thoughts on the incredible experience she had during this time.

Birmingham Future had been pivotal in my career and personal development to that point.

My journey as a member, to being part of the Development Committee, to being Development Committee Chair, and then having the opportunity to undertake the three year commitment of Deputy Chair, Chair and Immediate Past Chair of the organisation, has helped to shape me as a business leader in so many ways.

It was a lot of hard work, alongside running SimkissGuy Recruitment Ltd – still in its first years, but it was worth every second.

Looking back, I feel so proud of what we achieved together, as a group of passionate and committed young professionals. You all know who you are.

Mentoring and Leadership skills were the theme of my year as Chair.

From creating and launching the Future Leadership Programme, in partnership with Aston Business School, to reimagining the Future Mentoring Academy that supported and inspired so many, it was a period full of collaboration, innovation and energy.

And of course, one of my standout memories will always be the honour of my Chair’s speech at the BYPY Awards, an unforgettable night celebrating the very best of Birmingham’s young professional talent.

I will always be grateful to the brilliant, passionate and driven people I had the chance to work alongside. Those experiences not only shaped my journey but also deepened my love for this city and its extraordinary community of professionals.

I have no idea where those 10 years have gone – even with losing a couple with lockdowns. But one thing that will never change is the amazingly talented, passionate and capable young people we have in this city.

As time moves on, it is great to see the amazing team at the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce proudly flying the flag for young professions through Future Faces and the evolution of the GBYPY Awards (can’t wait for another amazing evening!).

Here’s to the next generation of leaders continuing to make their mark on Birmingham’s future!
